dealing with stress eating

Rewind January 2020; I am sure many of us had 2020 New Year’s Resolutions in place with a plan. We were going to eat better, exercise more and live a healthier life style. Sounds pretty normal for a New Year’s resolution right?  I am sure for many it started off pretty smoothly. We went to exercise classes three or four times a week, cooked and planned nutritious meals and snacked on healthy foods.

But that all that changed when the pandemic struck. During the lockdowns, when we were stuck at home, anxiety levels went up. Many of us stopped exercising and started stress eating. All the healthy meals and snacks out of the door.  Instead, we snacked on cookies, sweets and potato chips. Sound familiar?

We were feeding the soul more than feeding the stomach. We were making sure to eat things that made us feel better — not just nutritional items.

A global survey conducted confirms that many of us experienced this firsthand: The coronavirus pandemic and resulting lockdowns led to dramatic changes in health behaviors, prompting people around the world to cut back on physical activity and eat more junk foods. It drove anxiety levels higher and disrupted sleep. People who were already over weight faced increased health risks, may have fared the worst.

Not only has the pandemic and lockdowns disrupted everyday life, isolated people from friends and family, and spawned an economic crisis, with tens of millions of people losing jobs or finding their incomes sharply reduced. The enormous levels of stress has impacted on how we sleep, how much we exercise and what we eat. Mental and physical health has been affected.

Present day 2021; we look back on 2020 and many of us are still in disbelief. Every one of us has experienced a loss of sorts and facing uncertainly. The only resolution that can be made for 2021 at this point is to keep yourself healthy and safe. We do not have to be blindsided like we were in 2020.

However, where do we start? Your physical and mental health should be your number one priority in 2021. Many people do not even know how or where to begin when dealing with stress eating. The more weight that is gained, the higher the health risk and then stress levels start soaring. A vicious circle right?

From my experience the way to deal with taking back your control of your stress eating is support and accountability. I remember a time back in the 90’s when I was a walking time bomb – burnt out to the max eating everything in sight– and it dawned on me that unless I made a radical change in my lifestyle, I was heading for burn out and serious health issues. A friend introduced me to a 10 Day Detox Plan. At first, I was skeptical, not sure I had the discipline to follow through. However, once I got through the first 4 days of not feeling so great, a mental and physical transition took place. I was struck by how much clearer my thinking had become. I had a deeper consciousness. I was coping better with my stress levels. The discipline, the sense of control and added bonus of weight reduction was exactly what got me motivated to take charge of my wellbeing.  Reflecting back to that time in my life and relating to how people are feeling at the moment is proof alone that embarking on a 10 Day Detox with support and motivation is the perfect way to start off a new year. Ten days is not all that long but it will certainly will kick your butt and get you thinking differently. It worked for me 20 years ago and I have never looked back.  In the last 6 months of 2020 Natural Attitude put over 60 people globally on a 10 Day Detox Plan and the results have been amazing. It certainly will get you thinking a whole lot differently about 2021.
